Captain Morgan's Trail

A marsh, rare birds, a cursed town, buried treasure, a fjord, a cave with a primitive man and a hermit, an ancient solar observatory - all this is just a step from the Mediterranean flurry! Just choose Captain Morgan's Trail and everything will soon make sense. Departure is from the Palud ornithological nature reserve, a brackish marsh just 10 km southeast away from Rovinj where you can enjoy the rich variety of ornithofauna while listening to the chirping of 217 registered bird species.

Continuing along the road you will come to Bale where you can visit Kaštel Bembo, a magnificent gothic-renaissance citadel. Passing through Stancija Bembo you will arrive in Kanfanar where you can visit St Silvestre’s Church. In the year 1714, after the plague in nearby Dvigrad, a valuable pulpit from the basilica of the same name with a relief of St Sofia was transferred to this church. A few kilometres west of Kanfanar and you can catch a glimpse of the medieval Dvigrad and if you climb up to the town, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the beautiful Lim Fjord landscape.

On the northern side of the Lim Fjord, is the village of Jural where you can visit the St Margarita’s church which dates back to the 17th century. The village was inhabited by refugees escaping from the advancement of the Turks in 1622. Just to stir your imagination - you are now in an area where many legends and mysteries based on historical events still live on: that of Dvigrad devastated by the plague due to an ancient curse, of Captain Morgan’s pirates’ buried treasure near to the village, which was named after him (Mrgani), the cave where the remains of  primitive man were found and where, as legend has it, St Romuald used to live as a hermit in the Middle Ages. You will certainly enjoy visiting all these places.

Near the point of your arrival, by the village of Sošići, is Maklavun hill, an astral-archaeological site and a burial ground from the Bronze Age. Take a look at the sky as here you will find the first most famous solar observatory in the whole of Croatia. Finally, take time to pass through Rovinjsko Selo, a village founded in 1526 by refugees from the area of Zadar who were escaping from the advancement of the Turks.

Exhausted from so many exciting experiences, complete your journey in one of the local Istrian taverns, rewarding yourself with a delicious lunch and don’t forget to accompany it with a goblet of wine - Captain Morgan would have done the same. So, what are you waiting for!
