Welcome to the trail of the istrian malvasia which, from the centenary oak trees and the authentic stancia’s (rural properties), surrounded by peaceful fields and churches, leads until the sunny coastline on which the real Mediterranean is breathed. We start from Brtonigla – another picturesque medieval town located on top of the hill that arises on the place of an prehistoric hill-fort. The place that has firstly been mentioned in written documents in the year 1234 as Ortoneglo, has a special own saying; A small place of great discoveries! So, let’s see one think at a time! After enjoying the unforgettable landscape and the beauties of the nature, find the traces of history and of the centenary culture in the permanent exhibition of archaeological findings which are exposed in the site of the local Italian community. The provenience of the items extends from the bronze age until the roman period and the late antiquity, each witnessing about the rich history of this area. Do not miss to visit the churches: the parish church of St. Zenon – patron of Brtonigla, built in the XIX century in the sole centre, on the place of an older one dating from the XV century, the church of St. Roch from the XIV century, the church of the Blessed Virgin Mary on a cemetery from the XVI century and the church of All Saints also replacing an older one. A special note for all the lovers of art – visit the memorial gallery of Aleksandar Rukavina. After visiting the centre of Brtonigla, the track leads you further towards Baredine. If you go further, here you are by the river Mirna, and then through the villages of St. Dionysus and Serbani you’ll reach the coastline and the touristic village Karigador, located by the sea on the northern part of the port Dajla. The name Karigador comes from the Italian word “caricare” (to load in) because that was the place of a port in which oak trees designated for the Venetian arsenal have been shipped, and afterwards for exporting the agricultural good from the Brtonigla area. If you continue further towards Radini and Lukoni, soon you’ll get back to Brtonigla from where your odyssey on the track of the istrian malvasia has just begun.
